This summer, a slice of the Italian Riviera – in retro style – is coming to London, courtesy of a glittering Bulgari pop-up at London’s Selfridges (July 8 to August 4). In June, the maison launched its latest high-jewellery collection, Cinemagia – a daring, sparkling ode to the silver screen that took its cue from 1960s Italian films as much as fairytale favourites such as Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz. The Selfridges pop-up, located at the corner of Oxford Street and Duke Street, will embrace the theme with vintage-style accents such as outsized, old Hollywood-type premiere lights and candy-striped popcorn stands, with profits from the sale of popcorn going to the charity Save the Children.
But it’s the exclusive accessories, jewellery and watches that will really fire up the emotions. First up are the limited edition, jazzed-up Serpenti Forever bags (six designs, in two styles) that are tipped to be collector’s items. The first (£1,660) is a glamorous nod to a 1950s-esque lead actress figure – think Elizabeth Taylor or Gina Lollobrigida, both star clients of the house in their day – with images from retro film posters and Bulgari jewels printed on the leather. The second model (£1,880) is more figurative and romantic, its snake-head clasp hung with miniature lipstick, make-up mirror or nail-polish charms.
The jewellery side features two divine Divas’ Dream necklaces, global exclusives for the department store (the collection officially launches worldwide in September). The jewels, in rose gold and diamonds, are hung with Bulgari’s signature fan-motif pendant in either mother-of-pearl (£3,360) or a deep-red carnelian (£3,540).
Selfridges will also present a watch exclusive, with a special edition of Bulgari’s Serpenti Tubogas wraparound style (£8,900) that is finished in on-trend bi-metal, here in rose gold and steel. Topped with a fabulous guilloche green dial and limited to 20 pieces, the design is a masterclass in craftsmanship and engineering and is fashioned from 5m of handwound rose gold and steel wires for maximum flexibility, comfort and a rakishly modern dash of la dolce vita.
