A good bag should be for life, not just for Christmas: that surely is the philosophy behind Belgian label Delvaux’s glorious festive collection. It arrives at the brand’s boutiques on Tuesday November 15, just in time for party season, but Delvaux’s quality, craft and design take things to heirloom level.
The collection is inspired by Vienna secessionist painter Gustav Klimt and his “golden” phase, when he applied gold leaf not only to paintings but also to friezes in Brussels’ Stoclet Palace. The Poussière d’Etoiles designs are spectacular pieces – in particular the Tempête MM top-handle bag (£6,650) and the Signature clutch (£1,800), which both offer the striking contrast of smooth black calf with a star-shaped mosaic of brass triangles plated in rose and yellow gold, palladium or ruthenium. Pieced together by hand like a precision jigsaw, the stars on the flap and bag body are articulated to be as flexible as the leather and to reflect light as they move, giving a beautiful relief effect.
The technique used for the Feuille d’Or pieces sees a soft, red-tinted alligator skin coated with gold leaf and then gently rubbed to reveal the outline of the scales and a hint of the colour beneath. The top-handle bags (from £19,750) have matching gold hardware and are, like the other bags in the collection, lined in metallic golden lambskin.
