Superlative new London lodgings

From the luxe London Edition to the sky-high appeal of the Shangri-La

When Shand did his last Big Egg Hunt (second picture; Life is Beautiful by Mr Brainwash) in LONDON, the star billing went to Humpty Dumpty, which sat on the garden wall of Clarence House before reaching £51,000 at auction. Cut to The London Edition hotel (www.edition-hotels.marriott.com; from £270), and it looks like one of his eggs got left behind in the lobby (first picture), in the form of the giant stainless-steel Ingo Maurer orb light hanging from the ceiling. This new 173-room hotel on Berners Street is the second collaboration Ian Schrager has made with Marriott under the Edition brand flag, and there’s already a buzz to the ground-floor restaurant and bar. As to the rooms: the Shard (third picture) – where the Shangri-La Hotel (www.shangri-la.com; from £480) is slated to open soon – may be getting the headlines, but the views of the BT Tower from room 621 at the London Edition provide a certain retro appeal.
