JK Place Capri(www.jkcapri.com; from €390) is hardly an insiders’ secret, so it could easily rest on its laurels. Instead, the Capri hotel continues to pull off the tricky marriage of proper elegance and genuine, this-is-my-living-room ease more deftly than almost any other I can think of. Designer Michele Bonan’s extravagant aesthetic isn’t for everyone (though, boy, is it for me; the canary-yellow canopied bed and white-lacquered wood floors in the penthouse induce actual physical delight). The staff is to a person enthusiastic and informed. Mauro will have your boat trip to Nerano sorted in a flash, while Luigi, a bartender sul serio, extemporaneously concocts signature cocktails (trust him, it will be delicious) and new chef Eduardo Estatico turns traditional Campanian recipes creatively on their heads. Yes, JK Place Capri is close to the road, but if I look towards the slumbering mass of Vesuvius and the lights of Naples strung out like spilled jewels, I tune out the buzz of passing motorini quite quickly.
