Kit Kemp is the UK-based magic maker whose hotels’ signature alchemy of sophistication, wit and warmth has made them go-tos for the international creative classes. Her second New York address is The Whitby (firmdalehotels.com; from $795).

Its location, bang between MoMA and Central Park, was always going to lend it an instant-popularity edge (the high-gloss quotient in the restaurant is down to it being close to Hearst Magazines HQ, whose top editors have adopted it). But besides the winking Englishman-in-New York moments that won me over, from the Kemp-designed Wedgwood tea service in the restaurant to the terraces bordered in box hedges, there is the enduring appeal of Kemp’s love for colour and pattern; always lots of it, joyously combined.
