There are so many good places to stay in Marrakech (and a few clangers – an inevitability, given the 1,000-plus riads trading in the medina alone), but it has taken me nearly 20 visits over the past decade to find what I reckon is the most perfect one-bedroom villa in the Red City. At the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech (mandarinoriental.com; €893), each villa (there are 43) is set in its own walled garden; it’s the sprawling proportion of private space (a minimum 279sq m, including outdoor fireplace, kitchen and three separate lounging areas) contrasting with the design’s tone-on-tone simplicity – white rugs, white stone, white linens, white slipcovers, white bougainvillea for days – that’s outstanding. That, and the magically lit fire in the evening; and the sliding bedroom doors that lead directly into a 5m-long pool; and the singular balance of indulgence and sanctuary.
