First-class train travel is definitely romantic – but it also offers great benefits in terms of relaxation. With that in mind, Belmond Trains & Cruises has put together a special spa carriage on The Royal Scotsman, combining two pristine treatment cabins designed by Cotswolds-based Bamford Haybarn Spa with some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery.
The iconic train departs from Edinburgh on Monday April 17 for a week-long journey via lochs and mountains (from £2,448 for a two-night trip, including all meals, beverages and excursions). Treatments on offer (from £25) include Bamford’s bespoke facial, a deep hot-stone back massage, a de-stressing massage and a mani/pedi using eco-friendly Kure Bazaar nail polishes.
And it’s not just about the spa – the onboard dining experience is pretty special too. There are two dining cars, Raven and Swift, in which to sample chef Mark Tamburrini’s delicious interpretations of Scotland’s finest seasonal produce, including wild salmon, West Coast scallops, lamb from the Shetland Isles, Perthshire pork and fresh vegetables and herbs. The full-board package also includes afternoon tea, pre-dinner cocktails and nibbles, and after-dinner petit fours. And of course, the bar boasts at least 30 types of whisky.
An open-air observation car provides views of landmarks such as the Kyle of Lochalsh, Cairngorms National Park, Glamis Castle (childhood home of the late Queen Mother) and the historic Culloden battlefield, while the cosy en-suite cabins come with complimentary aromatic Bamford products and personal steward service.
