If you have a loved one who is into outdoorsy activities (and I don’t mean walking to Waitrose rather than driving), this could be the watch for them, even if they’ve already embraced such wearable gadgetry. The Garmin Fenix 3 is being hailed widely as the best activity watch around and very handsome it is too, in a military way. It’s also ridiculously tough and you certainly know you’re wearing it (this is not a small watch). If you give it on Christmas Day, expect a slight hiccup: the strap is good but you’ll need to take it to a jeweller’s to get it shortened.
You can set the Fenix 3 to monitor a serious number of activities: Climb, Hike, Run, Trail Run, Indoor Run, Bike, Indoor Bike, Pool Swim, Open Water, Triathlon, Crosscountry Ski, Ski/Board. There may be more, but I was exhausted just scrolling through the options on my sample Sapphire. It also has GPS, a thermometer, an altimeter and a plethora of functions to connect with a Fenix phone app. Its accessories – heart-rate monitors, speed/cadence sensors, foot pods and power meters among them – connect to both the watch and other fitness products using the ANT+ wireless system. Very impressive technology.
