With the season’s polo and tennis cups well underway, Fortnum & Mason has partnered with English vineyard Nyetimber to transport the sporting spirit to Britain’s well-manicured lawns with a limited edition of 50 sets of garden skittles, on sale exclusively at the department store from the end of June.
No garden gala is complete without appropriate refreshments, of course. So, inside the £250 beech-boxed games set rests a bottle of the newly launched Nyetimber Rosé 2009, a dry West Sussex blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, in an in-built storage rack alongside the 8in skittles.
Each of the pins features a specially commissioned illustration of a quintessentially British character, from a master of the foxhounds atop her horse to a Welsh guardsman stood to attention. But toppling a tartan-kilted Highlander, a cricketer and a suave secret agent all in one well-aimed throw? Therein lies the afternoon’s challenge.
