Velvet has been a staple of Thom Sweeney’s bespoke offering since tailors Thom Whiddett and Luke Sweeney launched their brand 13 years ago. This season, the duo are debuting their first ready-to-wear eveningwear collection. The limited-edition jacket designs, launching November 1, will have a maximum of ten of each style available in the pair’s London and New York stores. As you’d expect from the classic-with-a-twist tailoring label, this is black tie with a fresh spin.

“With this collection we wanted to bring the creativity of our bespoke offering to those clients who don’t always plan months in advance,” says Whiddett. “And we wanted to showcase how you can go way beyond an all-black grosgrain dinner suit into a more dynamic colour palette and a contemporary look.”

The jackets come in bottle-green, burgundy, navy-blue and chocolate-brown velvet

The jackets, which are priced from £1,395, are certainly a step away from the traditional noir dinner attire. Colours include bottle green, burgundy, navy blue and chocolate brown and the cuts are contemporary, with a fresh double-breasted silhouette fashioned with shawl lapels and two buttons. There’s also a striking white corduroy jacket, finished with navy braiding and satin-covered buttons, a single and double-breasted tuxedo in midnight blue wool barathea, and two different tartan dress trouser styles. The quality is closer to bespoke than most tailors offer with ready-to-wear – as such, the jackets are made in Italy and are fully canvassed.
