Gucci’s daring new menswear collaboration

The 43 items, exclusive at Mr Porter, include smart houndstooth knits and vividly-coloured sportswear

The terms “new” and “old” Gucci have come strongly into play since the appointment of creative director Alessandro Michele in 2015, and the graphic pieces launched last month by Mr Porter are definitively new Gucci. The 43-item, exclusive collaboration will, in its aggregate, be too avant-garde for many, but as a longtime Gucci devotee I find certain items very tempting: the navy wool boating blazer (£1,180) with red and green taping, for example; or the bold red and black houndstooth with yellow and black stripe wool cardigan (£725). What Mr Porter calls “eccentric sportswear” equates to the house’s new tiger and bee motifs deployed on vivid-coloured pieces such as a felted hoody (£1,500) and a cubic “G”-logo, blue-on-yellow print for a jersey zip track top (£1,060). It’s pretty out-there stuff; perhaps a simple wallpaper-print silk scarf (£280) would be the best introduction.
