A traditional clothmaker with a modern twist

Weaving together the traditional and the contemporary

English clothmaker Scarlet & Argent has a heritage that spans seven family generations and a client list ranging from the British Army facing the Imperial Guard at Waterloo to British Princes William and Harry. Which is pretty impressive but, rather than rest on its traditional laurels, the brand has recently launched a line of contemporary woven home accessories and a totally 21st-century e-store from which to buy it.

The purchasing method may be high-tech but the actual products – a collection of woollen throws, blankets (Top & Tail Blanket, £250), cushions, draught excluders (first picture, £40) and door stops (£30) – are all made in Scarlet & Argent’s specialist mill using weaving techniques that have been employed in England since the Industrial Revolution.

And these blankets and accessories are very lovely. Super-soft, elegantly understated and made to last a lifetime, they will bring quiet comfort and joy to the winter season. Particularly the Equine Amber Throw (second picture, £105), which is inspired by the iconic Newmarket blanket but, being made from 100 per cent Shetland wool, is most definitely designed to wrap around humans.
