Friday January 9 marks the chic opening of The Polo Bar, fashion designer Ralph Lauren’s first foray into the competitive Manhattan restaurant scene. Located next door to the brand’s flagship store on the corner of 55th Street and Fifth Avenue, The Polo Bar will offer classic comfort foods such as chilli with warm pecorino biscuits, crispy kale salads and crab cakes and the bar’s signature burger.
Every detail has been overseen by Lauren – from the waiters’ wingtips and the fried olives, oysters and parsley-crisp bar snacks to the umber-coloured leather banquettes and copper-topped bar. A series of intimate tables welcomes diners for cocktails before they step into a subterranean space to feast. Here, booths are the place to cosy up for thick-cut New York strip and rib-eye steaks sourced from Lauren’s Double RL ranch in Colorado and a decadent five-layer chocolate cake or apple pie. Coffee is also a highlight, with custom organic blends created by Philadelphia’s La Colombe roasters.
“The Polo Bar has a warmth and casual kind of elegance that I think people will want to return to like a favourite club,” says Lauren. With its roaring fires and unfussy food, this is the place to hunker down for winter in style.
