Strong liquor and motor cars should never be enjoyed simultaneously, but there’s no denying that Christie’s has created an inspirational pairing by combining the quintessential gentleman’s accessories of a batch of single malt whiskies and a classic British sports car in a single lot that’s up for grabs in a unique online auction taking place from Tuesday September 25 to Tuesday October 9.
Held in partnership with the celebrated Balvenie Speyside distillery, the lot includes “The Balvenie DCS Compendium Chapter Four”, a collection of five rare whiskies dating from 1971 to 2009 that celebrate the career of David C Stewart MBE, who has been the distillery’s malt master for a remarkable 56 years – longer than anyone has ever held such a post in the whisky business.
Each of the five single-cask single malts celebrate a “chapter” of Stewart’s time at the distillery, while simultaneously paying tribute to the five on-site crafts that make the firm unique. In addition to the act of distilling, these comprise growing its own barley, using traditional floor maltings, employing its own coppersmiths to maintain its stills and making its own barrels.
The second half of the lot is formed by a Morgan V8 Roadster that has been customised with an array of Balvenie touches, including head rests and interior trims enhanced with the distiller’s motif and special paintwork in a rich-cream colour. The two firms first collaborated three years ago to produce three other Morgans that were used to tour the UK promoting Balvenie.
The successful bidder for the lot, which is estimated at $100,000 to $150,000 (£76,000 to £114,000), can also look forward to a visit to Dufftown and a personal tour of the distillery. Individual sets of The Balvenie DCS Compendium Chapter Four are due to be released at an estimated £30,000.
