Regular readers of this column might recall a recent lamentation regarding the lack of characterful hotels in Sydney – besides the quirky-cool Old Clare (theoldclare.com.au; from A$278, about £156) and and the ultra-simple charm of Bondi Beach’s Ravesis (hotelravesis.com; from about £160), there hasn’t been much to get excited about. Right on cue, the Paramount House Hotel (paramounthousehotel.com; from about £163) arrives in Surry Hills: the 29 extremely stylish rooms – with Japanese-style wood baths, handwoven rugs, big enclosed terraces and skylights recalling the work of James Turrell – are the latest addition to the former headquarters of Paramount Studios, now a mixed-use site, all of whose venues are open to hotel guests. There’s a rooftop wellness centre, a gorgeous retro-chic cinema – the Golden Age, complete with cocktail bar – and, this being Australia, a top-notch coffee bar.
