When Marie-Veronique Swannell opened Haute Déco, her Chelsea door-handle showroom, in 1994, it was with the founding principle of “designed by hand, made by hand”. Twenty-five years on she remains faithful to that motto, supplying handles – which she describes as “door jewellery” – in myriad materials, designs and finishes.

Swannell also offers an extensive customisation service and will create bespoke designs to commission. Monogram, her latest range of customisable handles with a hand-polished crystal resin finish, can be engraved with the owner’s initials, family crest or design of choice (from £450 per handle).

To mark its quarter-centenary this year, for every Monogram doorknob sold, Haute Déco is donating £40 to the Night Centre at The Connection at St Martin’s, London – the equivalent of a safe night’s sleep for a woman at the shelter.
