When the activist and writer Brooke Axtell shared the stage at the 2015 Grammys with Katy Perry, she made headlines with her account of suffering domestic violence as an adult. Also a victim of sexual abuse as a child, she set up She Is Rising to support young women who have been victims of abuse, rape and trafficking. This year, her foundation has joined with shoe brand Josefinas to create the capsule collection You Can Leave. The limited edition handmade sneakers have a prominent how-to-care-for label on the tongue or heel, as a reminder that every human should be treated with care. The numbers printed on the labels show sobering statistics, such as 7/10 – the number of women who suffer physical or sexual violence at least once in their life. Thirty per cent of proceeds worldwide go to She Is Rising; and 20 per cent in Portugal go to the Portuguese Association Against Domestic Violence.
