Rachelle Hruska MacPherson’s Lingua Franca brand hit the headlines recently after the 9-1-1 actor Connie Britton wore one of its black cashmere jumpers to the Golden Globes emblazoned with the words “poverty is sexist” in elegantly embroidered handwritten script. She launched her label in 2016 with jumpers bearing lyrics from hip-hop songs and subsequent designs have included the slogans “The future is female” and “I miss Barack”.

Her latest projects include jumpers with the slogans “Time’s Up” ($380; $100 donated to the Time’s Up legal defence fund to support women and men who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace) and “Professional enthusiast” ($360; all profits to Her Justice, which supports women living in poverty in New York). Also, for every sweater sold from her Resistance range she donates $100 to a charity of the buyer’s choice.
