Total wellness is the mission atVana Malsi Estate (www.vanaretreats.com; five-night programmes from £963), which opened in early 2014 in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. From physical manipulations to therapeutic meditations to cuisine, the goal is to be the vanguard of bespoke holistic health.

To this end its visionary owner Veer Singh this month debuts a Tibetan healing centre on the estate, spread across a series of new buildings housing meditation pavilions, a library, a shrine and, of course, multiple treatment rooms. The director and his staff have all completed training under specialists at the Men‑Tsee‑Khang – also known as the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute, revived in 1961 in Dharamsala by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
