Every pair of sunglasses in New Zealand fashion designer Karen Walker’s new collection comes with a chic screenprinted pouch created in collaboration with the Ethical Fashion Initiative, an organisation that pairs marginalised artisans with international brands, providing training and employment opportunities for everyone from metal cutters to production managers. The simple pouches, along with a range of more elaborate, beaded versions available to buy separately, were made by Maasai artisans working in rural Kenya.
Some of the artisans can also be seen modelling the sunglasses in the brand’s advertising campaign, shot by Australian fashion photographer Derek Henderson. “We were thrilled to collaborate with the Ethical Fashion Initiative on this project and wanted to expand on it by providing a glimpse into the world that the work is coming from,” says Walker.
