From jewellery in the form of perfume-infused earrings and cuffs to paperweights filled with scented ceramic discs, Kilian Hennessy’s desire to make fragrance a thing of beauty has taken him along some unexpected routes. Given that By Kilian was acquired by Estée Lauder in 2016, perhaps it’s not too surprising that his most recent venture is scented make-up.

His new Le Rouge Parfum lipstick collection taps the intrinsic link between taste and smell by infusing rich and generous bold red lipsticks with gourmand notes of vanilla-laden marshmallow and sweet orange blossom. The scent hits on application; it won’t linger distractingly all day but it can be reinvigorated with a lip smack, should you feel inclined.

There are six intense shades (£42 each), ranging from the orange-tinged Aphrodisiac Rouge, through the brickish elements of Intoxicating Rouge and on to the vampy, berry-red Devil Rouge. Each comes in a satin or velvet matte version – neither will dry your lips. As you’d expect from a creator with Lauder’s lipstick formulations readily at hand, they’re featherlight but lasting and don’t require re-application for hours.

The elegantly dark aesthetic familiar from By Kilian fragrances appears here too – the weighted cases carry his emblematic “Achilles Shield” motif engraved onto black lacquer – and are ornaments in their own right, reassuringly hefty in the hand.
