EXCEPTIONAL REPAIRS AND ALTERATIONS When Vanessa Jacobs’ shoe repairer kept ruining her favourite pairs, she decided to set up The Restory, her own restoration service (shoe restoration from around £20, bags from around £65) based in west London. This impressive operation is the work of a team that includes colour restorers, alteration specialists, fabric cleaners and very busy cobblers. The service caters for men and women, looking after everything from cleaning and maintenance to replacing lining or heels; reinforcing straps; repairs of fine details such as buckles, eyelets, zips and studs; and even a “breaking-in” service for new shoes. the-restory.comBEATRICE AIDIN

RESTORING ORDER: THE VIRTUAL WARDROBE Vault Couture offers a wardrobe service that includes everything from organisation to clothing and accessories storage, plus professional repairs, alterations, global delivery and a digital archive of wardrobe items. This service enables clients to create space in their own homes by storing bulky items and seasonal clothing elsewhere – and have them reappear where and when they are needed. Clients can use the database to group garments and accessories into itemised outfits; instead of combing through their full inventory, a curated wardrobe can be delivered to their chosen destination in a few clicks. “We then pick it up, dry clean it and replace any missing buttons, so that next time it is in pristine condition,” says founder Mounissa Chodieva. “We also provide additional items… a specific brand of socks, or a shirt or two. It’s like travelling without luggage.” From £1.20 per month per item (£3 including photography and virtual wardrobe). Online bespoke virtual wardrobe from £75 per month. 020-8993 5212; info@vaultcouture.com; vaultcouture.com. REBECCA ROSE

SPECIALIST CARE FOR VINTAGE PIECES Keeping vintage dresses as a sartorial go-to means paying attention to wear and tear. Handing over one such precious garment to anyone but an expert for alterations or repairs is a false economy: a hand-stitched 1930s silk gown is not going to benefit from a machine-sewn hemline. This is not about “make do and mend” – more about preserving something that is of historical style value and holds unique memories. What’s required is an expert with first-hand experience of how sewing styles have changed over the decades. Nanna Sandom, a specialist seamstress who is passionate about vintage fashion, runs Splendid Stitches from her studio in Bloomsbury. Garments can be customised or restyled to suit the owner, or an old favourite can be copied in a new fabric. splendidstitches.co.ukREBECCA ROSE
