Last year’s gymwear collaboration between Canadian sportswear brand Lululemon and fashion students from Central Saint Martins in London was so successful that it is now being repeated on a larger scale. Arriving this week is the Lululemon x CSM “Art of Motion” collection of two styles of leggings and a sports bra in abstract prints designed by six MA students, each playing with themes of calm and movement.
The inspiration for the collection was a trip the Lululemon team made to Kyoto to study the work of local artists and designers, many of whom work with highly specialised techniques perfected over generations. On their return, the team asked Central Saint Martins’ students from several fashion disciplines, including textiles, knitwear and womenswear, to create designs inspired by the styles and techniques they had observed in Japan.
The Quartzite print is based on the ink and screen printing found on Japanese ceramics; the Fractal is made by layering ink and oil colours onto marbled card; and the Kascade was made by layering watercolour and calligraphy on acetate to mimic the aesthetic of a prayer book. The design team has digitised each artwork and body-mapped each one to flatter physical contours and emphasise the illusion of movement, printing them on to Lululemon’s own lightweight sports fabric. The pieces are available at selected Lululemon stores and online, for a limited time: the bra is £45, the leggings £98.
