Shop openings and revamps in London are hardly rare events, but the reopening of Miu Miu’s Sloane Street store last week has provided a very personal reason to visit. A new customisation service for the brand’s classic evening pump, available solely at the Sloane Street space, allows the footwear to be completely refashioned in a cornucopia of colours and materials.
Coming with either a pointed or elegantly narrow, rounded toe, the pump (from £990) has 23 choices for uppers, spanning different combinations of colour and material, although some tones can be ordered only in the one material that suits them best. In the case of exotics, for example, ostrich (£2,590) comes just in peach, fuchsia, red or purple, while python (£1,250) is available solely in natural. Suede versions are in sky blue, orchid, peony or black; glitter in gold or silver; satin in cream, black, dove grey, sky blue, nude or navy; and patent leather in white, black, nude, pink, sky blue or navy.
The slightly flared block heel (in silver or pale gold) is personalised by a range of coloured stones designed to chime with any of the uppers, and deciding which options to go for is made easy thanks to a set of magnetic heels and pumps that attach together, giving an immediate impression of any colour combination – from exact matches to outrageous contrasts.
Orders take six weeks to make and deliver, and the colours stand out particularly well against the store’s new delicate blue walls (replacing the pale-gold damask decor that has been the brand’s hallmark for years). The carpet and ceiling are blue too, as are the soft stools and rounded sofas from which the personalised pumps are chosen.
