Rarely are the words “chic” and “disaster survival” used in the same sentence. They are, however, equally applicable to Preppi’s line of five stylish emergency preparation kits, which boast Hollywood A-list customers including Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts.
“In the instance of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes or floods, everybody needs a minimum three-day supply of food, water and first aid,” says LA-based Lauren Tafuri, who founded Preppi in 2014 with Ryan Kuhlman. “We wanted to create something for these situations that was as visually pleasing as it was functional.”
What the duo came up with is smart canvas bags with leather detailing that contain tech essentials such as solar-powered mobile chargers, as well as luxury comforts. The signature Prepster pack ($375 for one person), for example, features toiletries by Malin+Goetz and chocolate from Mast Brothers, alongside a Swiss army multitool knife and survival tube tent. The Prepster Black ($4,995), meanwhile, includes a satellite communicator and night-vision scope inside a fashionable all-black bag, which can even be monogrammed ($75), adding a preppy flourish to the preparedness.
As well as those A-list clients, fans from New York to Europe and the Middle East have snapped up the kits. “People don’t just stash them in the garage,” says Tafuri. “They have them in the room they live and entertain in, so that everything they need in an emergency is close by. And in calmer times the kits hold their own as a decorative objet.” Just don’t start tucking into the chocolate…
