Bags as works of art may seem a trifle pretentious but Christian Louboutin’s latest brainwave, ShoePeaks, is a surrealist homage to his friend David Lynch, whom he has known since they collaborated on a fetish-inspired photoshoot in 2007, and whose new Twin Peaks TV series will air next spring.
The bag (£2,495), which looks like a piece of fluid, sculpted architecture, is a craftwork tour de force. Sensually tactile, it is based on two of Louboutin’s classic So Kate stilettos, their iconic red soles forming the top and base, laid out in surrealist curves to form the twin peaks (and echoing the double life of Laura Palmer).
The bag’s tactile form was originally handcarved in wood in Louboutin’s Paris atelier from the So Kate and then rendered as a hand-sculpted mould at his Italian factory. Made in light but durable aluminium, either a polished gold metal or black lacquer finish reflects distorted images on the curved surfaces. The red soles are then added, embossed with the house logo.
Inside the lining is nude lambskin exactly like the So Kate, embossed in gold as the shoe’s interior would be. The detachable chain allows the bag to be worn on the shoulder or cross-body, and the whole creation is both avant garde and unsettlingly erotic, like Lynch’s work and many of Louboutin’s shoe designs.
The handwork involved means there will only be a very small production run of the bag, a few of which, in black, arrive at the Mount Street store on December 15, with the gold version online.
