Those who travel light often regret a lack of accessories to suit every occasion. Now London’s Berkeley hotel has come up with the perfect solution to this conundrum. Just when it’s time to change for dinner, it will deliver a bespoke fashion trunk to guests in the hotel’s Chelsea, Berkeley or Terrace suites (from £1,200 per night; the latter, designed by award-winning architect John Heah, are new this summer). The trunk is filled with vintage accessories to borrow and wear on a complimentary basis – or purchase on checkout, if they fall in love with one of these special pieces.
The trunk itself lifts the spirits. Handcrafted in calf leather by British trunk specialists Norton MacCullough & Locke, its 11 drawers are filled with a variety of vintage handbags, jewellery and scarves dating from the 1950s through to the 1990s. A flip-up mirror and suede-lined accessories tray assist the process of trying out a number of designs before making your final choice for the evening.
The designs have been personally handpicked by Fanny Moizant, co-founder of Vestiaire Collective, a designer fashion resale website with 4m members across 40 countries. Her selection for guests at The Berkeley includes some of her favourite accessories from designers including Chanel, Hermès, Christian Dior, YSL, Céline, Christian Lacroix and Oscar de la Renta. “Vintage takes us beyond fashion, adding a touch of mystique to a personal look,” she says.
You could, for example, accessorise your evening outfit with a chic pair of 1950s Dior earrings (€165), an exquisite 1960s Chanel brooch (€175), an eye-catching pair of Dior drop earrings (€155) from 1985 or a handsome lizard-skin Hermès bracelet (€829) from the early 1990s. To embellish your little black dress, you might choose a classic string of Chanel pearls (€714), a Dior pearl necklace (€415) or a dramatic Céline necklace with pendant discs (€130). And of course you will need an evening bag – perhaps a silk satin classic Chanel with gold chain (€820)? Or a YSL handbag with silk tasselled cord (€895), both dating from the 1980s.
“We are always looking for ways to make our guest experience more special and innovative here at The Berkeley, and we feel the introduction of our Fashion Trunk service offers guests the very best selection of vintage fashion and luxury in the comfort of their own suite,” says Knut Wylde, general manager at The Berkeley. They may well find this becomes an irresistible way of shopping too.
