The many cobbled mews to be found around London’s South Kensington were once home to numerous motor traders – until the property boom of the 1980s sent the values of these former carriage houses soaring to irresistible levels, meaning most were converted into chic and bijou homes. But there is one mews in South Kensington where “garagistes” still practise, and that’s Astwood Mews – the home of London Morgan, a dealership run by Anthony Barrell, who has recently collaborated with the factory in Malvern Link, Worcestershire, to create a limited run of six handbuilt special editions.
The LMV6 cars (£73,100, available on a first-come, first-served basis) are based on the high-performance 950kg Roadster model, which uses the same 3.7-litre Cyclone engine found in the considerably heavier Ford Mustang to power the car from standstill to 60mph in 5.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 140mph.
Barrell worked with Jon Wells, head of design at Morgan Motor Company, to design two special colour and trim combinations for the LMV6 cars – Porsche Crayon Grey paint with a contrasting mulberry leather interior, or Jaguar Opalescent Silver Blue with a black leather interior. Other features unique to the limited editions include graphite-coloured split-rim wheels shod with track-orientated Yokohama tyres, a throaty sports exhaust system, red-coloured Aero Racing brake callipers and Cibié Oscar spot lamps.
Inside, the cars also benefit from sports seats, LMV6 embroidered headrests and walnut dashboards finished in a matte lacquer, together with the many high-end features found on the standard Roadster, such as a Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel and a mohair hood and tonneau cover.
