Alexa (www.alexaprivatecruises.com) isn’t like any other boat in Indonesia. She has the bones of an original phinisi – the cargo vessels that have plied this archipelago for centuries – but has been redesigned by her stylish Russian owner to accommodate a single perfect suite.
The woodwork is painted white. The sails are white. The ropes are white. She is like sailing on a cloud, with a double bed to take in the views through glass windows. Alexa’s charter territory includesFlores and Komodo National Park, as well as Sumba, Sumbawaand Sulawesi, which are much travelled by larger boats, but none with just one room. Staffing comprises eight pin-sharp pros (also in white), including a divemaster, all of whom work to the guests’ schedule, with the $3,600 per night inclusive of every hour you melt under the hands of the on-board masseur. On the upper deck, with a soft wind, there’s no finer way to lose the hours than when the boat is under sail on a sun-pink sea.
