Greece has its pockets of wildness, including in the southern Peloponnese. Among the most elegant places to stay is Kinsterna (www.kinsternahotel.gr; from €120), a 13th-century mansion located outside the medieval-castle town of Monemvasia, a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Athens. Now the 27-suite hotel, soulfully decorated by the family that owns it, has a new run of rooms to compete with its original vaulted Byzantine ones: 11 residences (10 one-bedroom, one two-bedroom) and two two-bedroom villas dotted about the 18 acres of vineyards, olive, lemon and orange groves.
