The Brahmaputra’s source is on the Tibetan Plateau, with its headwaters near to holy Mount Kailash. Asia authority Remote Lands (www.remotelands.com) is now going deeper into Tibet, and Guge Kingdom (pictured), founded in the 10th century in the west of the country, is among the company’s latest territories for bespoke journeys. At one time Guge’s sphere of influence reached into Himachal Pradesh’s Spiti Valley; now it is a romantic repository of ruins 1,200 miles from Lhasa. Allowing time for acclimatisation with a five-day drive from Lhasa, the 14-night expedition, including two days’ circumambulation of Kailash, costs from $7,000, excluding international flights.
