Tufi Dive Resort (www.tufidive.com; doubles, £78; book through Steppes Travel, www.steppestravel.com) in Papua New Guinea isn’t easy to get to: into Port Moresby, PNG’s capital, followed by a 90-minute hop by small plane to the island’s northeast flank, washed by the Solomon Sea. Nor is the lodge luxury in terms of interiors: simple bungalows with private verandas, furnished with rattan four-posters. But who cares, when Tufi Resort opens up such ravishingly beautiful territory – and before you’ve even slipped beneath the water’s surface. The thousand-odd fjord-like inlets are backed by 100ft-high waterfalls with the days best spent cruising about with picnics, scuba gear and snorkels.
