The lively night scene makes this a fun alternative to the capital’s classics

If an overnight stay in Athens while en route to the lesser-known islands is needed, then New Hotel Athens (www.yeshotels.gr; B&B, from€175) is worth a nod, with its city-centre location (a 15-minute walk from the Acropolis) and its design (by the Brazilian Campana brothers). The witty aesthetic owes something also to the vision of its owner, the international arts patron Dakis Joannou (he with the jaunty Jeff Koons/Ivana Porfiri-designed superyacht). Lighting is fashioned from outsized evil eyes – the blue glass bead-charms hanging from every Greek cabbie’s mirror – while bedroom walls are decorated with shadow-puppet figures covered with gold. It’s fun and funky, and in the evening there’s a lively scene at the rooftop restaurant, making this hotel good for a night – no more – for people tired of the capital’s fustier classics.
