On the subcontinent it looks like autumn is turning into an Indian summer – with particularly interesting news in Calcutta, where The Penthouse (www.thepenthouse.com; Rs16,000; about £160) opens in the next few weeks. This nine-room city boutique hotel will feature plantation-style teak floors, a rooftop pool, a restaurant, a modern glass‑walled conservatory, and a two-room spa, in addition to two rooms with private garden terraces and hot tubs. The other address to know in India is Suján Rajmahal Palace (www.sujanluxury.com; from £350; pictured), the 20-room boutique hotel that occupied a 1729 Jaipur palace. The marble staircases, intricate chandeliers and mirrored ceilings would still be recognisable to former guests, including Jackie Kennedy, since its conversion from an unremarkable heritage hotel into an all-suite luxury number. Each room is like a little jewel – and jewels, as anyone familiar with India’s pink city will attest, is something Jaipur does better than anywhere else.
