Glorious Goodwood is always one of the social and sporting highlights of the summer. This year’s meeting begins on Tuesday July 29 and the big day to be there should be Friday August 1, when the South African L’Ormarins winery is sponsoring the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Stakes. To celebrate its new partnership with Goodwood, L’Ormarins is offering a fabulous prize to the winner of what will be Goodwood’s first-ever best-dressed competition. These contests are two a penny nowadays, but Goodwood has raised the bar. The judges will, apparently, be looking for “an exquisitely dressed” female racegoer in L’Ormarins’ signature colours of blue and white – and elegance will be the keynote, with a stunning hat essential.
The winner will get tickets for two for flights from London to Cape Town, five nights in a five-star hotel, a day at the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, South Africa’s most prestigious horse race, at Kenilworth racecourse on January 10, a private wine tasting and lunch at the L’Ormarins wine estate and the Drakenstein stud at Franschoek, a tour of the Franschoek Motor Museum, cocktails at Merchants on Long in the city and lunch at the Grand Café and Beach on Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. The South African racing and sporting season will be at its peak, and the trip should prove a luscious break from the British winter.
There will be plenty of other excitement at Goodwood during the week, too, not least the clash between the brilliant three-year-old Kingman and the older champion Toronado in the Qipco Sussex Stakes on Wednesday July 30.
