Opening up Ecuador to luxe travellers

Smart new accommodations in Quito and the Andes

In Quito, the old town now has a hotel worthy of the city’s architectural glories. The 31-room hotel Casa Gangotena (pictured, rendering of a room; www.casagangotena.com, from $460) occupies a converted 16th-century mansion house. Travellers who stave off a visit until November can pair their trip to the capital with Mashpi Lodge (www.mashpilodge.com, from $1,870, three-nights, all-inclusive), a new eco-lodge in the Ecuadorian cloud forest. Ten years ago, there was little accommodation of this standard – only converted haciendas, many of which had been run down. Mashpi opens up an under-visited area on the western slopes of the Andes. It also brings a rare hit of contemporary design to a destination emerging as more than just the gateway to The Galápagos.
