If Queenstown in New Zealand is the adventure capital of the southern hemisphere, then the new Owner's Cottage at Matakuri Lodge (www.matakaurilodge.com; from NZ$9,488, about £4,697, per night) is the region’s temple of luxury, where one can rest tired feet from all the hiking, biking and skiing. The four-bedroom house, serviced by the five-star lodge, sits on the edge of Lake Wakatipu; from every room – and from the outdoor Jacuzzi – there are far-reaching views of the Remarkables mountains. Guests can pop to a nearby peak for lunch in a helicopter and even play some heli-golf, hitting biodegradable balls off a 1,800m summit.
