Choppers on call are par for the course for the moneyed Carioca. They’re also one of the benefits of a new pop-up hotel, Maria Santa Teresa (www.designhotels.com; from $550) that’s just opened in the eponymous neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro. This low‑key guesthouse has been dramatically renovated into a six-room hotel that mixes Scandinavian rigour with Bohemian curios and accents in tangerine and fuchsia. Come January 2015, the pop-up will have been razed to the ground; the plan is for a new-build hotel designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan.
