Hyderabad is the focus of hotel openings on the Indian subcontinent, with two fabulous new properties. The soon-to-open Falaknuma Palace (pictured) is a lavish 1880s “Indo-Palladian” palace (its architect was Italian, hence the murals and painted ceilings), its layout inspired by the shape of a scorpion (www.tajhotels.com; doubles from £449).

By contrast, the Park Hyderabad (www.theparkhotels.com; rate on application) is infinitely modern, if no less extraordinary, with a perforated aluminium façade whose apertures open according to the sun’s strength.
