Saturday July 27 will be a big day for fans of the oldest of equestrian sports, as the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club is set to host the Hurlingham Polo International Day. In its bid to win the prestigious Coronation Cup, England will be playing one of the all-time greats – Argentina. “You are guaranteed to see some of the best polo in the world,” says Hurlingham Polo Association chief executive David Woodd.
For a practical insight into the sport of dressage, five-time Olympic British dressage rider Carl Hester will be running a masterclass on the day in which he’ll demonstrate the techniques that put him on the world dressage map (£120, including a ringside VIP table, soft drinks and a light lunch).
But for the best views of the match (and the attending VIPs), The 85 Club is the place to be. Guests of The 85 Club Hospitality (£305 per person) can enjoy a field-side private table, champagne or a gin cocktail on arrival and beer and wine throughout the day. A three-course lunch will feature chicken liver parfait, salmon mi-cuit with orange and fennel remoulade and pickled quail eggs, or a courgette and Cerney ash goat’s-cheese tart with panzanella, followed by tonka bean and yuzu crémeux. A polo afternoon tea will be served later.
For those wishing to extend the festivities – and possibly the revelry – into the early hours, celebrity-favourite cocktail bar Mahiki Mayfair will be hosting a tropical-themed afterparty.
