andBeyond (andbeyond.com) and South Africa go way back – all the way back, in fact, to that powerhouse, 29-lodge-strong safari operator’s inception in 1989, on a farming concession-turned-private reserve in KwaZulu-Natal called Phinda. For 2019, it has staked a (very elegant) claim in Sabi Sand, the Kruger-adjacent collection of private game reserves known for both its density of charismatic mega-fauna and some of Africa’s first mega-luxury-lodges, among them the Singita and Londolozi properties. The nine huge suites at Tengile River Lodge (from about £1,120 per person per night, based on two sharing) – all facing the Sand River, all eminently private – marry light timber and local stone in a happy contemporary harmony. The 26,000 acres of private reserve you’ve access to are a bonus.
