Gourmet-centric journeys are shaping up to be a 2019 thing; so to France, specifically to its less‑trod but deeply food-obsessed southwest, from Aquitaine to Poitou-Charentes – serious cognac, pork, seafood and wine country. Enter Domaine des Etangs (domainedesetangs.com; from €400), a sprawling private estate in Massignac converted into a stunning 29-room hotel. Its owner, Garance Primat, can now sort visits to any number of gourmet capitals within striking distance: Biarritz and French Basque Country (for seafood and charcuterie in equal, glorious measure), or Capbreton (oysters), or the Périgueux for some truffling, plus Bordeaux highlights – with the headliner a stay at Etangs itself, in a region known for its superlative beef (not least the beef you’ll enjoy at the Domaine, although not from the owner’s own, not-for-consumption Limousin cattle that roam the estate).
