The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is a manmade geothermal one-off, whose chalcedony-hued surface has made it one of the most Instagrammable attractions in a country rich in photogenic landscapes. Now it’s also home to The Retreat at Blue Lagoon (bluelagoon.com; from £1,265), an ultra-luxury, all-suite hotel, spa and restaurant that’s the brainchild of Grimur Sæmundsen, the Lagoon’s creator.

Three of the hotel’s 62 suites have terraces leading right into the Lagoon’s sulphur- and silica-rich‑healing waters. The Retreat Spa is built into 800-year-old lava flows and features steam rooms carved into the rock and therapeutic bathing “chambers”.
