New York hotelier Michael Achenbaum will make his European debut in Shoreditch this May with The Curtain, a much-anticipated hotel, restaurant and members’ club offering an eclectic mix of services and aesthetics.

Fusing modern New York sensibility with a slice of raw east London creativity, the space will combine exposed redbrick walls with modern lighting and custom-designed artworks by British photographer Mick Rock in its 120 guest rooms and suites (from £240 per night). Achenbaum’s Gansevoort hotels have become a byword for sleek, upscale design and the über-luxe rooftop area he has created in Shoreditch is likely to be the same; it will house a Moroccan-style heated pool and all-day brasserie, complete with retractable glass roof for year-round dining.

Those with membership (applications can be made online from May 1) will also have access to exclusive facilities open from 8am-2am daily, including the late-night Billy’s Bar and a “CBGB-inspired” live performance space featuring secret gigs, DJs and spoken-word performances. A large ballroom area will be available for private events, while a 40-seat lounge-style screening room will host movie nights, previews and presentations.

“There’s a real variety of spaces and experiences, that’s what makes this project so exciting,” says Achenbaum, who is keen to use this mix to foster a collaborative environment, using The Curtain to bring people from traditional artistic industries together with those in new media and technology, as well as with angel funders. To that end, a members-only co-working area is also due to open at the hotel in the autumn. “We’re redefining creativity,” says Achenbaum. “I think people are going to find The Curtain really unique.”

The venue will also be home to a new incarnation of New York’s Red Rooster restaurant, from acclaimed chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson, whose innovative take on American soul food will be open to the public alongside hotel guests and club members. And offering a remedy to hedonism, a 24-hour gym – a collaboration with The Vault Gym – will provide personalised workouts alongside classes such as yoga and Boom cycle, plus a dedicated wellness area with extensive treatment menus.
