One of Mexico City’s finest boutique hotels has chosen Napa Valley for its first US foray. Las Alcobas (; from $695) has quite a bit going for it, starting with its location: to one side is the town of St Helena, with easy on-foot access to excellent restaurants and crafty-chic shops; to the other is Beringer Estate, Napa’s oldest still-operating winery, which furnishes the bucolic vineyard views for the resort’s 68 rooms and suites.

Its main building is a newly renovated century-old homestead typical of the valley; the rooms hew more to the local contemporary stone-and-timber vernacular; and everywhere are creature comforts, from Rivolta Carmignani linens on the beds to a pool ringed with lounging cabanas.
