The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been in the spotlight since the arrival last autumn of Jalakara on Havelock Island(www.jalakara.info; from £161), the first genuine luxury resort in this India-administered territory.

Its owners claim to have an upscale charter boat on the agenda as their next project, but in the meantime, the Myanmar-based Burma Boating Company (www.burmaboating.com; from €2,150 per person per week) – specialists in Mergui Archipelago cruises – is finalising a handful of itineraries through these roughly 800 islands (one pictured) in the Andaman Sea, aboard the beautiful William Fife III-designed SY Sunshine or the converted six-cabin exploration vessel MY Drenec; watch this space for more details soon.

If Michelin-calibre cuisine and central air-con are more your thing – and you hold an Advanced Open Water Scuba certification – then consider Silversea’s Silver Discoverer (www.silversea.com), which departs Phuket on December 2 for the Andamans’ Ross and South Cinque islands – replete with top dive sites and powdery beaches that are some of the emptiest left in South Asia.
