Subtle tweaks have put Vamizi back at the top of east Africa’s best-of lists

One of the luxury pioneers on Mozambique’s beautifully evocative coastline was Vamizi, a private island in the far north of the Quirimbas archipelago. In recent years, as competition proliferated, its star waned somewhat. The service has undergone an overhaul, with various subtle tweaks made to the half-dozen massive villas (all between five and six bedrooms) sprawling along the powdery beach. But it still has the turtles who nest at the casuarinas’ edge; still arguably the best diving on the east African coast; still the pristine peacefulness of trade winds and deserted horizons. In short, still what you come for – just gratifyingly elevated.
