A mansion lands in a boho-chic Rio enclave

Vila Santa Teresa’s seven rooms provide a perfect Olympics hideaway

With the 2016 Olympics about to commence, all eyes are on Rio de Janeiro. Opening in time to host a lucky few is Vila Santa Teresa (www.vilasantateresa.com; from $420), a seven-room modernist mansion on the Monteiro de Carvalho family estate, high on a hill in the boho-chic Santa Teresa enclave.

Surrounded by eucalyptus and mango trees, with a view east over the city to Guanabara Bay, the hotel is run like a very elegant private house: guests check in, and out, at a time that suits them, consult with the chef on exactly what they fancy eating, and use the pool, kitchen and huge indoor-outdoor living room when they like.

Visitors later in the year should keep an eye peeled for Casa Camolese – the restaurant, deli, boutique brewery and jazz venue are a joint venture between local entertainment impresario Cello Camolese and the artist Vik Muniz, and are slated for an October opening.
