After the opening of Soho Farmhouse (www.sohofarmhouse.com; from £269) on a bucolic 100-acre estate in Oxfordshire comes a more modest, but still intriguing, entry onto the rural members-club scene. 10 Castle Street (www.10castlestreet.com; from £195) is housed in a Regency mansion on Cranborne Chase in Dorset – the one-time hunting ground famously favoured by kings, and some of southern England’s most photogenic countryside.

The renovation of the Grade II-listed building (pictured) has borne out charming results; its new tenants – a lighting designer and a wine merchant – saved the King John Inn outside Salisbury from dereliction in 2008, so have form with giving old buildings elegant new leases of life. Here, they have created several ground-floor dining and drinking spaces to complement the first-floor private club, complete with billiards room. The nine charming ensuite rooms, however, hung with original photography, are open to all paying guests.
