For British explorers of a more domestic inclination, there’s excellent news from the people who brought England The Pig portfolio of small, lovely country-house hotels (www.thepighotel.com; from £149) in The New Forest, Hampshire, Somerset and Dorset. They have Honiton, in Devon, in their sightlines for June, when they’ll take over the Elizabethan Combe House Hotel. The Pig at Combe (from £145 per night) will leverage all of Combe House’s assets – the 3,500 acres (complete with Bronze Age burial site), the situation 12km from the sea (and 15 minutes’ drive off the M5) and the 27 rooms and two thatched cottages, all burnished up with The Pig’s singular alchemy of luxe and homey – down to, of course, its signature USP: a gorgeous organic garden for little ones to gambol in.
